Endowment Surges for Professorship Named After Late Faculty Member
TEMPE, Ariz., Aug. 14, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Generous donations from family and friends, totaling nearly $700,000 so far, have led to the creation of the Joseph Feller Memorial Professorship in Environmental Law & Sustainability at the Sandra Day O'Connor College of Law at Arizona State University.
Beloved by faculty, staff, and students, Feller devoted his life, passion, and soaring intellect to preserving the lands of his beloved Southwest.
"Joe was a tremendous individual, and a great champion of the College of Law, and role model for our students," said Dean Douglas Sylvester. "For more than 25 years, he was the driving force behind the College's environmental law curriculum."
Sylvester added that the large number of generous gifts made toward the Joseph Feller Memorial Professorship is a testament to Feller's work and the impact he made on other's lives.
Soon after Feller's passing, the College of Law established the Professor Joseph Feller Memorial Scholarship to attract students interested in environmental law. The scholarship has collected approximately $25,000 since its founding. The first scholarship is being awarded this year.
Feller's brothers, Fred and Dan, however, wanted to ensure that his legacy as an academic and advocate would also continue. Through their generosity, the campaign to fund the Joseph Feller Memorial Professorship in Environmental Law & Sustainability was launched. To date, the College has raised nearly $700,000 toward the needed $1 million to endow the Professorship — all in the last year.
"Joe's legacy in environmental law and his importance to this institution requires us to get to the $1 million needed to create this endowed Professorship," Sylvester said. "People from all over the country have contacted us to contribute — so I am very confident we will reach that goal in the near future."
Feller died at the age of 59 on April 8, 2013.
