Enterprise Rose Architectural Fellowship Announces Class of 2012-2014
Prestigious Program Partners Emerging Architectural Leaders with Community Developers to Expand Design, Sustainability and Community Engagement Practices
COLUMBIA, Md., Nov. 16, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Enterprise Community Partners, Inc. (Enterprise) today named five exceptional young professionals to the 2012-2014 class of its prestigious Enterprise Rose Architectural Fellowship, the only national program that partners emerging architectural leaders with community developers for three years to unite a community-based approach to development with best practices in design. Fellows begin their work in January.
"The Enterprise Rose Architectural Fellowship emphasizes design excellence, sustainability and community engagement in the development of its own neighborhood, the three core principles of Enterprise's approach to design," said Katie Swenson, vice president, Design Initiatives, Enterprise. "The 2012-2014 Fellows represent the best emerging architects of tomorrow. Diverse in their fields of interest and capabilities, they will carry on Enterprise's commitment to design as the foundation for the long-term viability of affordable housing."
The 2012-2014 class of Enterprise Rose Architectural Fellows includes:
- Sam Beall, who will work with Cathedral Square Corporation in Burlington, Vermont, engaging community architecture for seniors utilizing principles of accessibility and sustainability.
- Samuel Carlsen, who will work at the Saint Paul Riverfront Corporation in Saint Paul, Minnesota, targeting problems critical to overall success of the Central Corridor Light Rail.
- Mark Matel, who will join Nuestra Comunidad Development Corporation in Boston, Massachusetts with the goal to re-develop Bartlett Yards into a sustainable residential and commercial node in the neighborhood of Roxbury.
- Ceara O'Leary, who will work with the Detroit Collaborative Design Center in Detroit, Michigan on a sustainable community design that is driven by the daylighting of a historical waterway. The project has the potential to serve as a model for progressive development in both Detroit as well as other cities facing similar challenges. Ceara was a recipient of the prestigious Sandy Hirshen Prize for Socially Responsible Architecture from the University of California, Berkeley, where she obtained her Masters degrees in Architecture and City Planning.
- Nathan Poel, who will work with the Office of Rural Farmworker Housing in Yakima, Washington to push the design of affordable farm worker housing beyond providing quality homes, and explore how housing can be used to create place and celebrate the identity of farm workers in eastern Washington.
Thirty-five Fellows to date have collectively produced or rehabilitated 7,000 affordable, energy-efficient homes in urban and rural communities across the country, as well as designed more than 46 community buildings, including day care facilities, health clinics and mixed-use properties.
Since the inception of Enterprise Green Communities Criteria in 2004, Fellows have used the criteria, the first national framework for building green affordable housing, as a baseline in their design efforts. The Fellowship plays an important role in helping Enterprise achieve its goal of ensuring all new affordable housing nationwide meets Enterprise Green Communities Criteria or an equivalent by 2020.
The Enterprise Rose Architectural Fellowship was created with the support of green urban solutions pioneer Jonathan Rose, an Enterprise trustee, in honor of his late father, Frederick P. Rose, the urban builder and philanthropist.
Funding for the 2012-2014 Enterprise Rose Architectural Fellowships is being provided by The Central Corridor Funder's Collaborative thru the Saint Paul Foundation, the Department of Housing and Urban Development, The Kresge Foundation and The McKnight Foundation.
