Enterprises Remain Focused on Virtualization and Private Cloud According to New Research By IT Monitoring Vendor, Opsview

LONDON, May 7, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Opsview, a leading IT monitoring vendor, has released new research indicating that 64% percent of those questioned identified virtualization as the primary focus for investment in 2013. The Opsview study also identified IT monitoring (55%) and private clouds (46%) as among their top initiatives for 2013.

The key trends from the study include:

• VMware continues to dominate the virtualization space with over 54% of respondents choosing them as their preferred vendor. However, Microsoft's market share is growing steadily with over 18%.
• Almost a quarter of respondents claimed that more than 75% of their entire IT infrastructure is now virtualized.
• Only 12% of those surveyed admitted to using Xen and KVM.
• Security was the number one concern for those adopting private cloud technologies, with cost and performance concerns largely addressed by the leading vendors.
• 52% of respondents indicated that their preferred private cloud supplier was VMware.
• Of those surveyed 25% have already deployed Cloud Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) solutions with a further 35% planning to in the near future.
• Amazon remains the clear leader in the IaaS space. When asked to identify their existing cloud service providers, 56% of respondents chose AWS, while only 19% selected Rackspace.

"However, what was surprising was the lack of traction by open source virtualization technologies such as KVM and Xen. Similarly open source private cloud initiatives like CloudStack and OpenStack didn't feature in our respondents plans as strongly as we'd anticipated," concluded Callway.

Conducted in Q2 of 2013, the Opsview study explored implementation plans for more than 12 technologies, drivers of cloud adoption and provider-selection criteria. The study was based on contributions by primary decision-makers at large and midsize enterprises in North America and Europe.
