EPA Recognizes LG Electronics USA Among Nation's Leading Green Power Users LG Reduces Carbon Footprint With Additional Green Power Purchases

WASHINGTON, June 20, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- LG Electronics USA Inc. has increased its green power use, further demonstrating its commitment to environmental sustainability and building upon its collaborative relationship with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the EPA Green Power Partnership.

Expanding its participation in the EPA Green Power Partnership to an organization-wide level in the United States, LG is now using nearly two million kilowatt-hours (kWh) of green power annually, which is enough to meet 11 percent of the organization's annual electricity use, up from 1 percent in 2011. This includes 100-percent green power for LG's U.S. headquarters in Englewood Cliffs, N.J.

LG is buying utility green power products from AEP Energy and ConEdison Solutions.  Representing a combination of wind, solar and biomass, this demonstrates a proactive choice to switch away from traditional sources of electricity generation and support cleaner renewable energy alternatives.

"Environmental sustainability is a core business principle at LG, so we are particularly proud to be recognized by the U.S. EPA for our leadership in the Green Power Partnership program," said Wayne Park, president and CEO, LG Electronics USA. "Using green power helps our organization become more sustainable, while also sending a message to others across the U.S. that supporting clean sources of electricity is a sound business decision and an important choice in addressing climate change."

Green power is electricity that is generated from environmentally preferable renewable resources, such as wind, solar, geothermal, biogas, biomass, and low-impact hydro. Use of green power helps accelerate the development of new renewable energy capacity nationwide and helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions from the power sector.

"We are thrilled that LG has further increased its commitment to green power use and is now an organization-wide EPA Green Power Partner," said Blaine Collison, director of the EPA Green Power Partnership. "By using renewable energy, LG is reducing carbon pollution and showing that what's good for the environment can also be good for business. We hope other organizations follow their example."

"Companies in the United States have a major role to play in boosting sustainability," said Jorge J. Lopez, president and CEO of ConEdison Solutions.  "By taking this responsibility seriously, LG Electronics stands as a role model for American industry.  As one of the country's top suppliers of clean energy, we are proud to provide LG Electronics with renewable power that helps them fulfill their corporate commitment to environmental preservation."

According to the EPA, LG Electronics USA's green power use of nearly two million kWh is equivalent to avoiding the carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions of nearly 300 passenger vehicles per year, or the CO2 emissions from the electricity use of more than 200 average American homes annually.

LG's green power purchases are just one example of the company's environmental leadership. In 2012 and 2013, the EPA named LG Electronics ENERGY STAR® Partner of the Year for manufacturing energy-efficient products and helping to educate millions of consumers about those products. The company has also led the way in electronics recycling, collecting and responsibly recycling more than 37 million pounds of unused and unusable electronics in 2012 in the U.S. through partnerships with retailers and third-party certified recyclers.

LG has made an industry-leading pledge to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from its U.S. operations by 50 percent by the end of 2020. The company is currently working to meet this goal through implementing a broad array of environmental stewardship programs, including initiatives related to energy efficiency, energy and water management, waste prevention and recycling, product stewardship, environmentally-preferred purchasing, green transportation and environmental education.
