Epic Fantasy Adventure with a Canadian Twist to Launch at Toronto International Book Fair
Habitan Series brings Aboriginal Culture and Canadian Wilderness to the World of Youth Fantasy
TORONTO, Nov. 12, 2014 /PRNewswire/ - Habitan Book One: The Parallel Place is set to launch at Toronto's first International Book Fair November 13th to the 16th at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre. The series, which is written for pre-teens and teens, uses Cree language and beliefs as the basis for the magical world of Habitan. The scenery and animals behind the story were drawn from the naturally varied and beautiful Canadian landscape. The series has garnered early reader praise for the adventure, plot twists and vivid descriptions. The narrative style has been described as having the magic of Harry Potter, the scenery of Lord of the Rings and the other worldliness of Narnia.
Cheryl Skory Suma, Author of the Habitan series is a proud multicultural Canadian, including one quarter Cree heritage. When her nine year old daughter asked her to write a story for her, Suma began the journey that would become the Habitan series. "I drew on experiences in my own life to craft an inspirational epic that I hope will motivate my children and others to stand up, believe and be brave in the face of difficult circumstances," said Suma. She holds an Honors degree in Child Psychology and a Masters of Health Sciences in Speech Language Pathology, and brings over 30 years of experience working with children and youth to her writing.
The Habitan books are interwoven with stunning natural photography shot specifically for the series at quintessentially Canadian locals including Cathedral Grove British Columbia and Vancouver Island. The book's team will be hosting a 20X20 booth at the Toronto International Book Fair that includes a twenty foot "story tunnel", an immersive audio and visual experience that allows the visitor to enter the world of Habitan. The animal sketches in the book were done by Melissa, Cheryl's 12 year old daughter. Paintings in the story tunnel and book were created by Steven Albert, whose credits include lead painter for movies such as Ants, Shrek and Madagascar while at Dreamworks.
There are four books in the Habitan series, Habitan Book 2: Parallel Futures is set for release in fall of 2015. Cheryl Skory Suma will be available for interviews at the book fair, or can be reached via email at [email protected] or by phone at 905-717-3221.
