Eric E. Ballou, Megan Martz Gilliland And Peyton M. Stroud Join Kaufman & Canoles

RICHMOND, Va., Sept. 5, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Kaufman & Canoles is pleased to announce the addition of Eric E. Ballou, Megan Martz Gilliland and Peyton M. Stroud to expand the firm's nationally recognized municipal and public finance team.

Mr. Ballou's practice focuses on public finance, transportation and local government matters, including traditional governmental finance, securities, state and local government law and public-private partnerships. Mr. Ballou also serves in a general counsel capacity to local and regional governmental entities. Ms. Gilliland specializes in complex business transactions including public finance; local government; business tax; and general corporate business matters for a distinguished client base. Ms. Gilliland also represents governmental bodies across the Commonwealth on municipal governance matters. Ms. Stroud's practice focuses on public finance, general business and local government matters.

Together Mr. Ballou, Ms. Gilliland and Ms. Stroud bring 47 years of experience in public finance transactions and their client roster includes borrowers, issuers, lenders and underwriters in various tax-exempt and taxable bond transactions, with an emphasis on governmental and 501(c)(3) and education financings, including governmental project financings and private activity bond matters.   

Mr. Ballou received his Bachelor of Arts degree, with highest distinction, from the University of Virginia in 1982 and a Juris Doctor degree from the University of Virginia School of Law in 1985. Ms. Gilliland received a Bachelor of Arts degree, cum laude, from William & Mary in 2002, a Juris Doctor degree, cum laude, from the University of Richmond School of Law in 2005, and a Master of Laws, with distinction, in taxation from Georgetown University Law Center in 2006. Ms. Stroud earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Virginia in 2011 and a Juris Doctor degree from the University of Richmond in 2016.

At Kaufman & Canoles, Mr. Ballou, Ms. Gilliland and Ms. Stroud will further share their business and tax expertise on corporate transactions including corporate formation and structuring, capital financing, mergers and acquisitions, asset protection, liability, risk management and joint ventures. They will enhance the Business Tax practice group with their expertise in tax-exempt organizations, including forming and obtaining federal tax-exempt status, and advising on maintaining tax-exempt status and other ongoing operational matters.

Mr. Ballou is a Fellow in the American College of Bond Counsel. Ms. Gilliland is the Immediate Past President of Virginia Women in Public Finance and is a member of the National Association of Bond Attorneys, and The Bar Association of the City of Richmond. Ms. Stroud serves on the Junior Board of The Faison Center and is active in Virginia Women in Public Finance and a member of The Bar Association of the City of Richmond.
