The present invention relates to methods and devices performing advanced search mechanisms to process, classify, filter and forward data packets and perform various searches on a data packet including Layer 2 to layer 4, protocols, or other combinations of key types. The invention relates to methods and devices that achieves the performance of Search performed by CAM, using external DRAM memory to reduce the need for costly external CAM.
