Eugene Chernenko: Both the current Ukrainian government and the opposition are equally responsible for the political turnoil in Ukraine
KIEV, Ukraine, January 24, 2014 /PRNewswire/ --
The Presidential Administration of Ukraine has lost control of the situation by committing a series of system errors, including the signing of a number of laws aimed at restricting the rights and freedoms of citizens, which were adopted by the Parliament of Ukraine in gross violation of the acting regulations, as well as the involvement of police forces to disperse the protesters.
Opposition party leaders Arseniy Yatsenyuk, Oleg Tyahnibok and Vitali Klitschko had done nothing for the protesters. There was no action plan regarding how to get the country out of the political and economic crisis. Nothing was done by the opposition in order to prevent the adoption of unpopular and heavily criticized laws. Due to inept actions and the hyper-ambition of Ukrainian politicians, they actually brought the country to a civil war.
Ukrainian society, inspired by the ideas of the Maidan, has demonstrated an enormous increase in national consciousness and set the finest example of self-organization.
One of the main achievements of Maidan is the birth of new breed of intelligent and socially-active people who are trying to find their own way out of this situation. One of the examples is community GroMaydan which is rapidly gaining popularity in social networks. According to GroMaydan members, Ukraine should follow the path of "the small deeds theory", where each member of the society makes a difference locally.
"Today, we need people who are able to come up with proposals on how to reform public authorities and local self-government bodies, judicial system, and specific regulations, in order to improve the system of control of these public authorities, and increase the transparency of their activities. We aim to find new ways for peaceful protests, new forms for expression of civic engagement, and finally, the new leaders. The goal of our activities is to promote the key values of civil society: equality, the ability to defend our interests, and the ability to make impact on power holders," reads the community website.
The issue Ukraine is facing nowadays is not about going pro-Europe or pro-Russia. In order to maintain stability and remain the pearl of Eastern Europe, Ukraine should be pro-Ukrainian, say GroMaydan members. And it is hard not to agree.
