EverFi and the National Basketball Association Bring African-American History to K-12 Schools
New Digital Course to Deploy Across All 30 NBA Markets
WASHINGTON, Feb. 11, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- EverFi, Inc., the education technology company that has empowered over 7 million learners with critical life skills, has teamed with the National Basketball Association (NBA) to educate young people on the rich history and remarkable contributions of African Americans through a new digital learning experience. The 306 - African-American History™ course will launch in 30 schools across all NBA team markets in conjunction with African-American History Month.
The partnership supports the NBA's multiplatform program, "Dream BIG," that celebrates the legacy of African-Americans through a series of event activations, educational programs and targeted media partnerships across the month of February, including an interactive "Dream BIG" station at the NBA All-Star Jam Session 2014 in New Orleans.
"We firmly believe that African-American history needs much greater focus in the classroom, and the 'Dream BIG' campaign puts a national spotlight on this issue," said EverFi CEO Tom Davidson. "EverFi is committed to bringing African-American history to life in vivid detail for students, and our partnership with the NBA provides a game-changing opportunity to provide this learning experience at no cost to schools."
The 306 learning course further exposes today's young people to the empowering stories of the African-American community and helps them draw inspiration from the grit and determination of these remarkable women and men. Through the use of EverFi's technology and instructional design expertise, historical events will come to life using engaging digital media, personalized learning simulations, and robust assessment.
The course was developed in collaboration with Dr. Clayborne Carson, Professor of History and Director of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Research and Education Institute at Stanford University. Selected in 1985 by Mrs. Coretta Scott King to edit and publish the papers of her late husband, Dr. Carson is one of the foremost scholars on African-American history and brings his peerless expertise to EverFi's 306 curriculum.
"Providing today's students with a connection to the deep history of their past and the strength shown by inspirational civic leaders who faced seemingly insurmountable obstacles is critical," said Dr. Carson. "We must empower a new generation to embrace this history and use it as an impetus for their own personal motivation and success."
306 is designed to address the skills and proficiencies outlined in the Common Core State Standards for writing and literacy in History and Social Studies, as well as individual states' standards for US History. Schools interested in adopting the 306 course may contact [email protected].
