BURLINGAME, Calif., May 23, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- In its recently released report, Exact Ventures found the overall wireless packet core market, including evolved packet core (EPC), grew 24 percent in the first quarter of 2012 compared to the same quarter last year. Growth in the newer EPC technology market out outperformed the traditional packet core market by a factor of almost 8, growing over 70 percent in the quarter. During the quarter, EPC session shipments nearly doubled year-over-year as operators continued to boost network capacity ahead of anticipated LTE subscriber and traffic growth.

"Growth in the wireless packet core market is generally the result of two factors: growth in mobile data traffic and growth in signaling traffic," said Greg Collins, Founder and Principal Analyst at Exact Ventures. "While mobile data traffic continues to double every year, signaling traffic is expected to grow even faster due to steady growth in the number of smartphone users worldwide as well as increases in the number of smartphone applications that continually query or update the network. Smartphones also generate significant signaling traffic by constantly turning on-and-off their data channels in order to save battery life." Collins added.
In the first quarter of this year, Ericsson took the top spot of the EPC market based on revenues, followed by Alcatel-Lucent, Nokia Siemens, Cisco, and Huawei.
