Facebook Likes Opscode and Private Chef™ Deploys Private Chef™ to Automate Systems Configuration in Web-Tier Infrastructure

Facebook Production Engineer Phil Dibowitz to Keynote at #ChefConf 2013 About Systems Management Philosophy, Implementation, and Best Practices

SEATTLE, Feb. 4, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Opscode®, the leader in cloud infrastructure automation, today announced that Facebook has deployed Opscode Private Chef™ to automate configuration and management within its web-tier infrastructure. Using Private Chef, Facebook's infrastructure team can manage thousands of servers, configurations, and administrative access policies within its dynamic compute environment.

"There are three dimensions of scale we generally look at for infrastructure – the number of servers, the volume of different configurations across those systems, and the number of people required to maintain those configurations," said Phil Dibowitz, Production Engineer, Facebook. "Opscode Private Chef provided an automation solution flexible enough to bend to our scale dynamics without requiring us to change our workflow. Private Chef provided top-flight support, earlier access to upcoming changes, and additional rich features on top of the functionality in open-source Chef. Further, Private Chef's basis on open-source Chef also aligns with our own open philosophy allowing us to contribute back to the greater Chef community."

Facebook, continuing its support of the open source community, also joined with Opscode to deliver Chef™11 (see separate release). Facebook played a role in field-testing this open source code base and also helped to speed its delivery to market.

"Facebook's infrastructure is both truly unique and a model for the future of enterprise computing. Their use of Private Chef to automate and manage this large-scale infrastructure illustrates the power of Chef in solving some of the most critical and complicated IT challenges on the planet," said Adam Jacob, Chief Customer Officer, Opscode. "But, more importantly, Facebook's use of Chef demonstrates Facebook's continuing commitment to open source and sharing their own best practices to help anyone trying to manage just a few servers, or ten thousand."

Private Chef provides a flexible model for reuse, enabling easy, consistent configuration of a company's expansive infrastructure. Using Private Chef, customers can manage the access policies governing thousands of developers and system administrators. In addition, Private Chef is backed by Opscode Services, providing customers with enterprise-grade support to ensure productive use of Chef.

Mr. Dibowitz will present a keynote address at Opscode's second annual user conference, #ChefConf 2013, taking place at the Hyatt Embarcadero in San Francisco, April 24-26. Dibowitz's presentation will discuss systems management philosophy, best practices, and how these strategies can be implemented successfully whether the environment is a few physical servers or a large-scale, global infrastructure.
