DENVER, March 25, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Farmland and King Soopers are partnering to donate 40,000 pounds of protein to the Food Bank of the Rockies. This donation marks one of three donation events happening across the Midwest to complete Farmland's recent Bacon for Santa campaign, a commitment to donate 500,000 meals to Feeding America®, the nation's largest domestic hunger relief charity, and its network of more than 200 food banks across the U.S.
Representatives from Farmland and King Soopers will present this donation to the Food Bank of the Rockies during a press conference on Wednesday, March 25, at 11:00 a.m. at the Food Bank of the Rockies' main warehouse, located at 10700 E. 45th Avenue, Denver, C.O.
"40,000 pounds of pork will provide a serving of protein to 160,000 hungry men, women and children in our service area. One in seven Coloradans struggles to have enough to eat and nearly one in four kids live in food insecure households. This donation will be a huge help to our neighbors in need and we are grateful to Farmland for this generous contribution," said Kevin Seggelke, President and CEO of Food Bank of the Rockies.
"At King Soopers, giving back to our local communities is a part of our culture," said Kelli McGannon, King Soopers spokeswoman. "The Farmland Bacon for Santa campaign provided a great chance for us to offer some help to our neighbors in need and we thank both Farmland and the Food Bank of the Rockies for the opportunity to partner on such a worthy cause."
In December, Farmland partnered with Feeding America to spread holiday cheer and raise awareness through the Bacon for Santa campaign. Bacon lovers pledged to join Farmland in the fight against hunger, and this donation celebrates the ongoing commitment to help ensure that American families in need do not go hungry.
"Smithfield Foods' family of brands, including Farmland, has made more than 205 donations across the country through the company's Helping Hungry Homes program," said Dennis Pittman, Senior Director of Corporate Communications and Public Affairs for Smithfield. "We're proud to continue this goodwill through the Farmland Bacon for Santa campaign, and hope others are inspired to continue to give back throughout the year."
Smithfield Foods and its independent operating companies have a long history of stocking food banks, supporting after-school nutrition programs and providing food relief in the wake of natural disasters. In January 2008, Smithfield established their Helping Hungry Homes initiatives to help ensure that American families in need do not go hungry.
