MINNEAPOLIS, July 2, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Father and ultra-marathon runner Shaun Evans and 9-year-old son Shamus embark on their latest journey in an effort to give back. "Power to Push" will officially kick off in Seattle on Friday, July 3.
Shamus, who was born with cerebral palsy that limits the use of his legs, will commence the voyage by walking out of Puget Sound onto the beach at Golden Gardens Park on Friday afternoon. In 2013, the family was the beneficiary of Ainsley's Angels of America, a national nonprofit that aims to build awareness about America's special needs community through inclusion in all aspects of life, and granted the gift of mobility. Now, the New York natives are embarking on a coast-to-coast journey to provide others with the same.
"It's certainly not your conventional summer break," said Evans. "The support of our friends, family, community and generous sponsors, like LARABAR, is what motivates us. Ainsley's Angels enabled our family to stay active and now it's our turn to give back."
The pair will cover 15 states in the span of 60 days, starting in Seattle and finishing at Pelham Bay in New York on September 1. Shamus, who can walk with assistance, plans to physically cross both the start and finish lines with the aid of his father. Along the way, Shaun and Shamus will donate a Freedom Chair on behalf of Ainsley's Angels to at least one deserving family in each state.
Evans continued, "Typically, I have Shamus to motivate me and pull me along, but this summer I have the extra motivation of kids across the USA, pulling me from state to state to deliver our next gift of mobility. The joy that running brings to Shamus is contagious and we are so excited to share that joy with families across America."
"Shaun and Shamus are averaging 50-60 miles per day," said Julia Wing-Larson, marketing manager. "To say that their athleticism and mission is inspirational would be an understatement. LARABAR was so inspired by Shaun and Shamus' mission, we felt compelled to help fuel their journey through funds and the clean fuel of LARABAR Original Fruit & Nut Food Bar."
To train for the race, Shaun relied on the clean fuel of LARABAR bars and consumed several during each long-distance run to help sustain his energy level. The brand is excited for the opportunity to help others cheer Shaun and Shamus on throughout their run.
