Fattah Announces Grant to Drexel University to Advance Standards Education
The university will receive funding from the Department of Commerce's National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) to support the integration of standards education into graduate curriculum
WASHINGTON, Oct. 31, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Today, Congressman Chaka Fattah (PA-02) announced that Drexel University will receive $56,931 from the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), an agency in the Department of Commerce. The grant will support the integration of documentary and measurement standards curriculum for graduate students studying in the STEM fields.
Drexel received one of only six competitive grants awarded nationwide. Congressman Fattah serves as the lead Democrat on the House Appropriations Subcommittee that oversees funding appropriations for NIST; the grant is part of the Standards Services Curricula Development Cooperative Agreement Program.
"Drexel University continues to be acknowledged for their top graduate programs that continue to produce our nation's next generation of STEM workers, and this grant will help further the innovative curriculum available to these students," Congressman Fattah said. "The STEM fields are especially reliant on standardization, and I applaud NIST and Drexel for their commitment to ensuring our skilled workforce is both trained and knowledgeable in this subject. As we work to strengthen the manufacturing and technology industries in the United States, having these skills will be extremely critical to making our country more competitive in a global economy."
Drexel will use the award funding to direct a summer workshop for graduate students studying in social sciences and science, technology, engineering, or math disciplines that focus on the role of standards in global patterns of industrial transformation and innovation. The new curriculum will combine contextual and practical elements and will introduce students to the political and economic trends that impact standards development, implementation and uptake.
In a release, Acting NIST Director Willie May said, "I am proud to announce the 2014 grant recipients. In addition to strengthening NIST's ties to the academic community, this program introduces students to the importance of standards and supporting the creation of new learning resources on standards and standardization."
