Federal Panel Grants Lanier Law Firm Motion for Hearing on National Coordination of DePuy Hip Implant Lawsuits
HOUSTON, Oct. 21 /PRNewswire/ -- A panel of seven federal judges has granted The Lanier Law Firm's motion for a hearing to determine the national coordination of all DePuy hip device cases in In re: DePuy Orthopaedics Inc. ASR Hip Implant Products Liability Litigation (MDL 2197).
The United States Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation granted the motion on Oct. 15, 2010, and scheduled a hearing on the DePuy hip implant litigation for Nov. 18, 2010, at Duke University School of Law.
In September, the Houston and Los Angeles offices of The Lanier Law Firm asked the federal panel for national coordination of the litigation.
"Early on, we recognized the critical need for a national roadmap in a case of this complexity arising from a global hip recall," says firm founder Mark Lanier.
Mr. Lanier and Los Angeles managing attorney Dana Taschner lead a group of firm attorneys representing more than 100 DePuy hip implant patients across 30 states, in addition to several overseas hip implant recipients.
Earlier this year, Johnson & Johnson (NYSE: JNJ) recalled two hip replacement implants based on the high number of people requiring a second surgery. The recalled implants, manufactured by Johnson & Johnson's DePuy Orthopaedics Inc. unit, include the ASR XL Acetabular System and DePuy ASR Hip Resurfacing System.
In 2001, lawyers from The Lanier Law Firm were significantly involved in another hip recall where patients required a second surgery to remove an implant sold by Sulzer Orthopedics. The Sulzer recall resulted in a nationwide settlement of $1.2 billion for patients.
The firm has set up the website http://www.recalledhip.com to provide information on the latest recall from Johnson & Johnson in addition to information for concerned implant recipients and their families.
With offices in Los Angeles, Palo Alto, Houston and New York, The Lanier Law Firm represents clients across the U.S. in recalled hip implant claims, pharmaceutical liability lawsuits, product liability cases, and many others.
