National Geographic Channel Contest Embodies the Spirit of Exploration Through Photography While Showcasing the Beauty of the Americas in Our Own Backyards

Contest Timed to the Upcoming World Premiere Miniseries Event Untamed Americas – June 10-11 on the National Geographic Channels

WASHINGTON, May 10, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- National Geographic Channel spent more than two years in the field, traveling thousands of miles from Alaska to Patagonia, to capture the extreme wildlife of the continent for Untamed Americas — a new four-hour, high-definition miniseries premiering this June that reveals the grit and glory in the wilds of the Americas.  Now, National Geographic Channel turns to its viewers — as fellow travelers, explorers and photographers — to showcase the beauty of the continent in their own backyards on Instagram.

From May 4 through June 18, viewers are encouraged to upload a photo to Instagram that best represents their Untamed Americas and tag it with the hashtag #untamedamericas.  The contest will embody the spirit of exploration through photography while showcasing the beauty of the Americas in our own backyards.

A panel of handpicked judges with backgrounds in nature, photography and travel will choose the best photo.  Judges include wildlife naturalist and host of Nat Geo WILD's America the Wild Casey Anderson ; landscape photographer and Instagram artist extraordinaire Cole Rise ; and Cynthia Drescher , editor of the pop culture travel guide Jaunted.  The winning photo will be featured on the National Geographic Channel Web site, and the winner will receive an Untamed Americas photography prize pack, including a National Geographic camera bag filled with a Nikon D3100 and lens as well as a subscription to National Geographic Magazine.

To further encourage viewers to celebrate the wonders of the continent through photo exploration, National Geographic Channel will also feature a variety of content on the Untamed Americas blog, including photo essays and tutorials on mobile and travel photography from photographer Cole Rise . 

Untamed Americas, narrated by Academy Award-nominated actor Josh Brolin , premieres June 10 and 11 at 9 p.m. ET/PT as the first ever simulcast event on National Geographic Channel, Nat Geo WILD and Nat Geo Mundo .
