FHC highlights Brazilian skill at negotiation at LIDE BUSINESS MEETING
SAO PAULO, May 14, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Fernando Henrique Cardoso, former President of Brazil from 1995 to 2005, opened the LIDE BUSINESS MEETING Seminar, sponsored by the LIDE – Grupo de Lideres Empresariais ('Group of Business Leaders') and the Brazilian-American Chamber Of Commerce, on an optimistic note. "Brazil has possibilities, in spite of all its difficulties," he affirmed, and flagged as a positive point the Brazilian skill at negotiation. The seminar took place today, May 13, at the Harvard Club in New York.
"Sao Paulo is the Brazilian state that woke up to its self-confidence before the others. The ability to listen and build things are virtues of Paulistas, whose GDP is larger than that of Argentina. We have to construct a new moment in Brazil, and this is to be done with the maturation of social forces and leadership. Despite the criticisms I make, I'm a big believer in Brazil. I'm a big believer in Sao Paulo," FHC concluded.
According to Joao Doria, President of LIDE, the purpose of the event is to show the Brazil that we want. "We're going to talk here about the Brazil we aspire to for everyone, where public managers are not ashamed to be public figures," he declared.
Governor Geraldo Alckmin began his presentation emphasizing that "Brazil didn't know what a stable currency was until the government of FHC. We've reaped the fruits of this work begun by the former President. Sao Paulo is cosmopolitan, the second largest Brazilian economy, and we have the lowest indebtedness historically," he said.
Alckmin underscored the achievements of Sao Paulo during his administration, such as the drop in homicides and theft in the area of Security. Recently, Honda and Hyundai have installed or expanded their operations in the state. "In the Health field, we're studying new partnerships. Through an international call for bids with the IDB, we've raised US$ 300 million, to be paid in 15 years, for construction projects aimed at increasing production of water and basic sanitation," he said.
"I have faith in freedom, and I believe that politics is hope. We're going to overcome the crisis. Brazilian society is better than its political elite, and it is committed to development," he concluded.
