Fidelis SecureCare Delivers Water, Baby Wipes to Flint's El Shaddai to Support Senior Health Needs during Water Crisis
TROY, Mich., March 29, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- In response to the specific needs of seniors affected by Flint's water contamination issues, Fidelis SecureCare, a Southeast Michigan based Medicare-Medicaid health plan, delivered bottled water and baby wipes today to El Shaddai Ministries in Flint.
Fidelis SecureCare is coordinating the donation with the Genesee County Community Action Resource Department (GCCARD). Fidelis SecureCare donated 60 cases of bottled water and 100 packages of baby wipes. Baby wipes are needed by seniors for daily hygiene needs where normal bathing and showering may pose skin problems for elderly individuals residing in certain parts of the city.
"Our employees in Southeast Michigan feel a strong call to help the people of Flint," said Amy Williams, CEO of Fidelis SecureCare. "As an organization that focuses on improving the lives of seniors every day, we are especially moved to help seniors in the Flint community, many of whom already struggle with health issues and may not have support from family or nearby neighbors to assist them. We are pleased to partner with GCCARD and El Shaddai in their work to make the lives of Flint's seniors better, easier and healthier each day."
GCCARD serves approximately 1,200 seniors aged 60 and over each day. They also serve disabled individuals covered by Medicaid.
El Shaddai's Church of God in Christ on Downtown Flint is one of several donation pick up sites established as a relief location. The church does not limit the amount of bottled water available to residents. Signs are placed out in the roads and church leaders take to local radio to let residents know they have bottled water and other items available.
Approximately 100,000 families in Flint have been affected by the water contamination crisis, including many low-income seniors. More than 40 percent of city residents live below the poverty level.
