According to Fight Like a Girl's founder and President, Sandy Ellis, the organization's non-profit endeavors started with Fight Like a Girl Utah in 2013 with plans to ultimately establish a local Fight Like a Girl Chapter in each state. "Utah is our prototype," explains Ellis, "we wanted to get it up and running smoothly so that we would have a solid and fully functioning model for the remaining states. Thanks to our dedicated Director in Utah we've done that, and now we're ready to start our next Chapter."
Although Fight Like a Girl Ohio is based in Westlake, a western suburb of Cleveland, its fundraising efforts will cover the entire state including Cleveland, Columbus, and Cincinnati. "We're excited to expand our fundraising efforts to Ohio since this is where our corporate offices are based," Ellis added, "we're looking forward to establishing local partnerships and assisting individuals in need of support right here at home. Jennifer has already jumped in and is working on making that happen sooner than later. We are very happy to have her as part of the Fight Like a Girl team!"
Previously, Jennifer founded and managed her own non-profit organization, Ashley's Hope, for six years. Ashley's Hope was created in honor of Jennifer's daughter, Ashley, who battled cancer three times at 19-months-old, 2-years-old, and again at 3 ½-years-old. Jennifer gave up everything to care and provide for her daughter during this time, all the while filling the roles of wife and mother to her other daughter, who herself battles food allergies as well as ADHD, depression and PTSD.
This period of her life was the catapult for her passion to help others. Reflecting on the experience of having a child with cancer, Jennifer explains "I became aware of how hard social workers and case workers work but the need for help for families dealing with a serious medical diagnosis is great, and I truly felt that I had the call of helping others." Although Ashley still struggles with the daily challenges of chemo side-effects, Jennifer is happy to report that she is now 9 years in remission and in high school.
Jennifer resides in Cleveland with her husband and three children.
