Fine antiques from Memphis collector's estate to be offered at Oct. 17-18 auction in New Orleans
NEW ORLEANS, Aug. 20, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- On Oct. 17-18, New Orleans Auction Galleries will offer a collection of fine antiques from the estate of Theresa Higgins. The collection includes fine and decorative art, cut glass and several important furniture pieces by noted American makers such as John Henry Belter, John and Joseph Meeks and Thomas Brooks. The Higgins estate will be featured alongside property from several other estates and private collections from throughout the country.
Theresa Higgins was born July 26, 1916, in Shelby, Miss. As a young woman, she moved north to Memphis, Tenn., to attend business school. She met her husband, William Higgins, and the two married shortly thereafter, remaining together for 68 years until William's death.
Mrs. Higgins was involved in the Memphis community as a long-time member of St. Louis Catholic Church and St. James Catholic Church, as well as the Chickasaw Country Club and the Nineteenth Century Club, a women's organization founded in 1890 that focused on influencing the moral, philanthropic and educational future of Memphis. As a well-read, socially engaged and generous member of her community, the Nineteenth Century Club was an important part of Mrs. Higgins' life. Notoriously strong-willed and opinionated, she loved to entertain, and from her home to her clothing and makeup, presentation was always a top priority.
In 1955, the couple built a home together in East Memphis, providing the perfect space for Mrs. Higgins to build her collection of American furniture and decorative arts, something she shared with her close-knit circle of friends. The collection reflects her lifelong passion for fine antiques and her meticulous stewardship.
