Firefighter, Corporate Executive and Taxi Driver Top CareerCast.com's Most Stressful Jobs List
CARLSBAD, Calif., April 21 /PRNewswire/ -- Firefighter, Corporate Executive and Taxi Driver are the nation's three most stressful jobs, according to a new report on the most and least stressful professions by CareerCast.com. The report surveyed 200 different professions, measuring work environment, job competitiveness and risk to determine the rankings.
A number of the most stressful jobs, such as Commercial Pilot and Surgeon, are considered highly sought-after positions, and candidates frequently undergo rigorous and costly training for the chance at one of these careers. Competition among such high-stress jobs as Advertising Executives and Real Estate Agents, for example, has increased exponentially as the economy has worsened, while Police Officers, Highway Patrol Officers and Firefighters regularly risk their lives and work in extremely dangerous environments. A long workday also tends to intensify the effects of stress.
"While fear of losing your job may keep you awake at night, the nation's most stressful job – firefighter – has one of the lowest unemployment rates," explains Tony Lee, publisher, CareerCast.com. "On the other hand, many low-stress jobs offer little room for advancement, and often don't appeal to ambitious, educated job seekers."
Becoming an Appliance Repairer or Forklift Operator may be good for the heart rate, but these positions often come with a low salary and little room for advancement. Other jobs with low stress include Janitor, Musical Instrument Repairer and Medical Records Technician.
The criteria used by CareerCast.com researchers to determine the most and least stressful jobs include 21 different job demands that invoke stress. Each demand was assigned a range of points, and a high score was given if the demand was a major part of the job, while fewer points were given if the demand wasn't normally required.
