First annual 'Hands On Heritage Festival' offers weekend of fun activities to celebrate Colorado culture and history

DENVER, May 7,2013 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- History Colorado will host its first annual Hands On Heritage Festival on May 18 and 19 at the History Colorado Center. As part of Archaeology and Historic Preservation Month, the festival celebrates how Colorado's places and cultures have shaped who we are today. Visitors can take part in demonstrations presented by culinary experts, craftspeople, masons and ranchers to experience Colorado's extraordinary heritage. Special features include live performances, film screenings and presentations—along with History Colorado Center exhibits.

Inside, visit 16 activity stations to make adobe bricks, weave a Navajo rug, design your own cattle brand, build a timber frame, or learn to make pasta, sausage and sauerkraut from scratch. Watch live performances from American Indian singers and dancers, Fandango dancers and Taiko drummers, screenings from Rocky Mountain PBS's new Colorado Experience television series, and presentations about Colorado's "Most Endangered Places."

Outside, enjoy food and craft beer inspired by the National Western Stock Show on the Café Rendezvous patio, listen to local talent presented by Swallow Hill Music, and try your hand at traditional building techniques with help from Bent's Old Fort National Historic Site and Natural Dwelling, LLC.

The festival is free with admission to the History Colorado Center. General Admission: $10 adults; $8 student and seniors; $6 children 6 to 12; free for children 5 and under.
