A family-friendly event, the Walk, Run and Stroll for CP was presented by the Guayabera Lady Foundation and held at Coral Reef Park. More than 500 people attended, including numerous representatives from government and media. Local government representatives on hand to show their support for the important mission of Samantha's Purpose included Village of Palmetto Bay Mayor Eugene Flinn and Councilwomen Karyn Cunningham and Larissa Siegel Lara. Miami-Dade County Commissioner Daniella Levine Cava also attended.
Proceeds from the event will help fund grants for individuals with CP and the organizations that support and encourage them. Apart from fundraising, the event's other goal was to shine a light on a very challenging condition that affects approximately 1 in 323 children in the United States and is the most common physical disability in children.
Samantha's Purpose is working together with Miami Dade College and the Intercontinental Hotel to raise awareness for National Cerebral Palsy Day on March 25. The hotel will illuminate its edifice in green, while Miami Dade College will do the same for its Freedom Tower. This marks the second year that Miami-Dade College have donated their time and resources to further the mission of Samantha's Purpose.
Cerebral Palsy is a neurological disorder that affects a person's coordination and muscle control. The disorder usually manifests in infancy or early childhood. While there is currently no cure, physical and occupational therapy can help many people with CP lead full and productive lives.
Planning is already underway for the 2016 edition of the Walk, Run and Stroll for Cerebral Palsy. Samantha's Purpose, together with its generous sponsors, hope to make next year's event an even bigger success. Until then, the organization will continue to spearhead awareness campaigns and fundraisers in support of the CP community.
