First Ever Reliance Bright Smile Scholarship Awarded to Southern California Student
CHICAGO, Sept. 21, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Nicholas Azurin of Diamond Bar, California is the winner of the inaugural Reliance Dental Bright Smile Scholarship.
"I am so grateful for this opportunity," Azurin said. "It's a huge help, and I think it's also a good reminder for college students to go to the dentist. It is hard for them due to their workloads."
Reliance Dental, manufacturer of dental acrylics and supplies for over a century, introduced the Bright Smile Scholarship program earlier this year to help promote better oral health habits among college age people. Recent research shows barely 50% of Millennials make regular dentist visits, the lowest percentage of any age group. They are away from home, adjusting to a new lifestyle, and going to the dentist becomes a low priority. The result is an upturn in Millennials who need major dental work because they have failed to see a dentist for several years.
To apply for the Bright Smile Scholarship, applicants like Azurin were required to get sign off as practicing good oral health habits by a dentist. "The idea was to drive students to a dentist with their scholarship application in the hopes that while they were there, they would do more, like getting a check up," said Tom Rissman, CEO of Reliance Dental. "Any increase in oral care for this group is a plus."
In addition, applicants were required to submit a poster or social media design promoting the benefits of good dental habits. This got Millennials thinking about their own dental care. Azurin's winning design featured toothbrushes as a weapon to "fight off plaque," stating "the fate of all mandible-kind rests in your hands."
Azurin's design is currently being featured in Reliance's September ad in Dental Products Report magazine.
The idea for the scholarship came from Reliance's marketing agency TBI. TBI president Tom Baer says, "As far as we can tell, no one has ever used a scholarship as an incentive to encourage better oral care habits. This program will help both dentists and patients."
Entries for the scholarship were received from throughout the United States, with the most coming from the Chicago area, which is home to Reliance Dental. Students applying were attending a wide range of schools. Azurin attends the Otis College of Art and Design in Los Angeles.
