AKRON, Ohio, July 3, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- In the wake of a devastating wind and thunderstorm that caused widespread damage across West Virginia last weekend, The FirstEnergy Foundation is contributing $5,000 to the Volunteer West Virginia Food Drive to help provide much needed supplies for the state's food banks and pantries.

In addition to The FirstEnergy Foundation's grant, the company established 10 locations across West Virginia where residents without power from the storm could receive free water and ice.

"When disaster strikes the communities we serve, we understand the hardships that arise and are here to help in every way possible," said Jim Haney , president of West Virginia Operations for FirstEnergy. "We're glad that the FirstEnergy Foundation grant can assist food pantries in providing for residents as they recover from the storm."

FirstEnergy Corp.'s (NYSE: FE) Mon Power utility serves 500,000 customers in 47 West Virginia counties, and its Potomac Edison utility serves approximately 135,000 customers in the Eastern Panhandle of West Virginia.

The FirstEnergy Foundation is funded solely by FirstEnergy Corp. and provides support to non-profit, tax-exempt health and human services agencies; educational organizations; cultural and arts programs and institutions; and civic groups in areas served by FirstEnergy's 10 electric operating companies and in areas where the company has facilities.  Foundation contributions support programs and initiatives that help ensure the safety and health of the community, promote economic development, advance professional development, and support employee involvement and investment.
