For This Father/Daughter Team, Talking About Death & Dying Is Just a Game
"EXPIRED - A Death-Positive Discussion Game for Mortals" now on Kickstarter
CANMER, Ky., June 9, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- It's a radical idea: Turning a serious discussion about death and dying into a card game. But father & daughter Jim and Jess Erskine of Canmer, KY have done just that with their new game "EXPIRED – A Death Positive Discussion Game for Mortals" currently featured on the crowdfunding site Kickstarter. "EXPIRED," they say, is more than just a party game – it reinvents the conversation about death and dying with curiosity, compassion, and a touch of humor. A video message introducing the game is available here.

"We live in a culture where being 'honest' about death and dying is taboo," says Jim Erskine. "Most of us go to great lengths to avoid talking or even thinking about the subject – especially in a group. But being able to discuss death openly – especially in a relaxed game environment can be quite liberating and life affirming. 'EXPIRED' is about getting in touch with your own mortality and learning to appreciate life all the more."
"EXPIRED" consists of a deck of 64 question cards, with topics that range from lighthearted ("If you were given an envelope with the date and time of your death inside, would you open it?") to the profound ("How do you feel when someone you know dies and you weren't able to see them one last time?"). The game is suitable for ages teen through adult, and can be played either as a straight discussion game or as a traditional card game.
No matter how one chooses to play, the object of "EXPIRED" is always the same – to create a relaxed, non-judgmental and non-threatening atmosphere where players can talk freely about death and dying, and learn more about their own fears and beliefs along the way.
The Erskines' current Kickstarter campaign is currently underway to raise the funds to publish "EXPIRED" later this summer. Campaign backers will not only be first in line to get a copy of the game, but will also have some input into the final game questions and design elements.
