Former Chancellor of NYC Schools Sees Opportunity for Deep Transformation in Schools in New Role as Head of Revolution K12
Rudy Crew capitalizes on wealth of knowledge in public education to drive corporate sector growth
SANTA MONICA, Calif., Jan. 20, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Rudy Crew, former chancellor of the New York City Schools and 2008 National Superintendent of the Year, joins Revolution K12 as president in order to impact school reform nationwide through the implementation of adaptive technology tools that support teachers and provide blended instruction. Revolution K12 is a rapidly-growing web-based adaptive software division of Revolution Prep. During his 25 years as an educational leader, Crew has seen first-hand how technology can effectively be used to drive school improvement and help students reach higher performance levels.
"Every student in every school in the U.S. deserves an education that prepares them for college and beyond. Revolution K12 is focused on better preparing students for rich, meaningful lives as workers in a global, knowledge-based economy and that fits well with my life's work," said Crew. As president of Revolution K12, Crew will drive the company's product development efforts, as well as district and state-level education relationships. "As an innovator in adaptive, online diagnostic assessments, Revolution K12 can help drive teacher effectiveness by providing detailed data to individualize instruction," Crew continued.
As New York's chancellor and as superintendent of Miami-Dade County Public Schools, Crew established a record of change and innovation, including creating special groups of low-performing schools that received intensive support and developing a "Parent Academy" to empower parents to help their children in learning and in life. After making significant gains in student performance, reductions in achievement gaps among students and a dramatic reduction in overcrowding, the district was twice a finalist for the prestigious Broad Prize in Urban Education. Crew is also a professor of clinical education at the Rossier School of Education at the University of Southern California and the author of Only Connect: The Way to Save Our Schools.
"Dr. Crew is a nationally-acclaimed educator who has remained a teacher at heart," said Jake Neuberg, Revolution Prep co-founder. "Throughout his career he has always strived for educational excellence in all students. The depth and breadth of his expertise in learning will be instrumental in leading our company as we continue to grow."
Crew has served on several boards and committees, including the Carnegie Foundation's Commission on Mathematics and Science Education, the National Superintendents Roundtable, and the Education Task Force. He is an associate in education at the Harvard Graduate School of Education, where he has been part of the Urban Superintendents Program since 1992.
Crew holds a doctor of education degree in educational administration and a master of education degree in urban education from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. He received a bachelor of arts degree in management from Babson College.
