Former Chief of Elder Abuse Unit at Manhattan District Attorney's Office Joins EverSafe
COLUMBIA, Md., Nov. 6, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Elizabeth Loewy, formerly chief of the Elder Abuse Unit at the Manhattan District Attorney's Office, has joined EverSafe as general counsel and senior vice president of industry relations.
EverSafe is the first technology solution designed to combat elder financial exploitation, a growing epidemic that costs older Americans billions of dollars annually. The EverSafe service detects unauthorized credit and debit card use, unusual cash withdrawals, missing deposits, changes in spending patterns and identity theft. Designed to protect older victims, EverSafe's suspicious activity alerts were developed in consultation with experts on aging, law enforcement and finance.
Loewy was an assistant district attorney in the Manhattan District Attorney's Office for 29 years. As head of the Elder Abuse Unit, she oversaw the investigation and prosecution of approximately 800 elder abuse cases annually. Loewy led the investigation and was trial counsel in the case involving the financial exploitation of well-known philanthropist Brooke Astor by her son and an attorney. The case, which resulted in convictions as to both defendants, dominated headlines for nearly a year in New York City.
In addition to her work as a prosecutor, Loewy has been a featured speaker at conferences for police, prosecutors, civil attorneys and financial services professionals nationwide. She has also been quoted in national publications and has appeared on television and radio as an expert on the issue of elder financial abuse.
At EverSafe, Loewy will act as liaison to external organizations focused on elder fraud as well as a company spokesperson on financial abuse. In addition, her expertise will play a pivotal role in ongoing product development.
"As a prosecutor, I was able to seek justice for older victims of financial exploitation — after the fact," said Loewy. "In my new role at EverSafe, I am confident that we can stop the financial abuse at its source, before a lifetime of savings is depleted."
Howard Tischler, EverSafe's founder and CEO said, "Liz is a great addition to our team. Working on the front lines in the fight against elder financial abuse, she has seen firsthand the destruction that this growing epidemic is causing seniors and their loved ones. Her leadership, experience and expertise are going to be invaluable to the company and our service."
