Former Federal Whistleblower Pens Dick Cheney-Bashing Satire Novels
"Politics derailed my career. This is my response." ~ Mike Kelly on his sci-fi comedy series
ARCATA, Calif., March 26, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- In September of 2002, Mike Kelly knew these two things: Someone had altered his findings on protections for threatened salmon, and tens of thousands of dead salmon now lined the banks of the lower Klamath River. Four years later, a Pulitzer Prize winning Washington Post feature detailed Dick Cheney's involvement in Kelly's Endangered Species Act consultation. For example:
Because of Cheney's intervention, the government reversed itself… Echoing Kelly's objections, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit observed that the 10-year plan wouldn't provide enough water for the fish until year nine. By then… "all the water in the world" could not save the fish, "for there will be none to protect." ~ The Washington Post (9th Circuit Court Case No. 03-16718, D.C. No. CV-02-02006-SBA)
After Kelly's resignation, he wrote a satirical science-vs-politics space adventure novel. The story has since become a trilogy in which other aliens and abducted Earthlings provide a Dick Cheney-esque alien with ever-worsening humiliations (but no torture).
I wanted to write a slightly more absurd version of my whistleblowing experience. ~ M. Sid Kelly

The message is that scientists and technical experts should pay more attention to politics.
Before he became a science bureaucrat, Kelly and his wife served as U.S. Peace Corps volunteers in Mali, West Africa. Today Kelly works with a variety of government agencies to design adequate protections for fish and wildlife during bridge replacement and repair projects. He was nominated for the 2003 Ron Ridenhour Award for Truth-Telling (won by Joseph Wilson).
Praise for Used Aliens:
M. Sid Kelly's Used Aliens is a fantastic, hilarious tour… Kelly does a fantastic job of introducing his universe – the varied aliens and wild personalities that populate the Galactic Pool. The history of the Pool is violent, unjust and filled with wacky ironies so it should be no surprise that things go wrong when they begin to observe the planet "Dirt." …this is an extremely high recommendation. ~Jason Weisberger, Publisher of BoingBoing.net
