TAMPA, Fla., Sept. 4, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- For four students of the Gary Lighthouse College Preparatory Academy, graduation day was doubly sweet. In addition to earning high school diplomas, they each also were awarded associate degrees from Ivy Tech Community College of Indiana.
The four students are:
- Joy Spence, daughter of Karen Spence of Gary, IN and Rodney Spence of Merrillville, IN
- Ricardo Hernandez, son of Ricardo and Cynthia Hernandez of Merrillville, IN
- Tamar Trice, daughter of Emeko Claypool of Gary, IN and Derrick Trice of Merrillville, IN
- Tamia Trice, daughter of Emeko Claypool of Gary, IN and Derrick Trice of Merrillville, IN
"These four students worked diligently to complete over 60 hours of college credit in addition to carrying a full load of demanding high school courses," said principal Rodney Bly. "Their achievement is proof of our philosophy that when we expect great things from our students, and accept no excuses, they will achieve great things."
They earned the two-year degrees through the national American Honors college program that takes an inter-disciplinary approach to honing skills in digital literacy, oral communication, critical thinking, and problem-solving. Students can continue their education by transferring to a national network of four-year colleges and universities that work in partnership with the program.
"The American Honors program gives high school students a jump start on college life. They learn how to advocate for themselves, work cooperatively, and how to make important decisions that impact their futures," said Catisha Toney, regional director of college transition.
The program is only available to students who are committed to earning a four-year degree.
Approximately 1,500 students are enrolled in the Gary Lighthouse Charter School in Gary, Ind. One hundred and fifty two scholars composed the graduating class of 2018. Graduation ceremonies were held June 3, 2018 and the Genesis Convention Center in Gary, IN.`
