Free Clinics Leader Responds to ACA-Repeal Bill
ALEXANDRIA, Va., Jan. 7, 2016 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Nicole Lamoureux, executive director of the National Association of Free and Charitable Clinics, has issued a statement reacting to the latest attempt by Congress to undo the Affordable Care Act:
"The House of Representatives under the rules of reconciliation sent a piece of legislation to repeal the Affordable Care Act (ACA) to the President's desk. While it will certainly be vetoed by the President, this action raises concerns for the future of health care in this country.
"Repealing the ACA would significantly decrease the number of individuals with access to health insurance coverage. While far from perfect, the ACA was designed to make health insurance more affordable and obtainable for some Americans, allowing millions to access care through exchanges, subsidies or expanded Medicaid programs.
"For decades, Free and Charitable Clinics have served as a critical part of the health care system in our country, providing help to those living with limited or no health care, through programs that address health education, medication access and primary, specialty, mental health and dental care. Our clinics hear heartbreaking stories daily from patients about how health care remains unobtainable even though those stories are not heard in the mainstream media.
"A hard conversation about health care coverage, the gaps left by the ACA, the cost of health care, dental care and medication as well as the availability of and access to health care needs to happen in this country. Political posturing and arguing will not solve the challenges that our clinics address and our patients deal with every day. We need both sides of the aisle to come together and make a commitment to build a culture in which the health of all people is one of our highest priorities.
"Free and Charitable Clinics, our patients, and our volunteers urge Congress and the Administration to put people before politics and address the needs of all Americans when it comes to health care affordability and access. We will continue serving our patients and our communities by providing much-needed health care, and we welcome the opportunity to work with policymakers on a real solution, so we can together build a healthier America one person at a time."
