FreedomWorks Corrects Inaccurate Cornyn Campaign Statement and Reports
WASHINGTON, July 16, 2013 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- On Thursday July 11th, the John Cornyn for Senate campaign issued a statement announcing the addition of a former FreedomWorks employee, Brendan Steinhauser, claiming he "led the group's effort to elect Ted Cruz to the Senate in 2012." The Cornyn campaign further claims that "Steinhauser also led grassroots campaigns to help elect Senators Marco Rubio, Mike Lee and Pat Toomey."
FreedomWorks issued the following statement to correct the record:
FreedomWorks is obligated to clarify the false and potentially misleading statements made about Brendan Steinhauser by the John Cornyn for Senate campaign. Steinhauser did not lead our efforts to elect Ted Cruz. As a FreedomWorks employee, Steinhauser was not in charge of our political efforts in 2010 or 2012. FreedomWorks is a 501 (c3) and a 501 (c4), engaging in education and issue advocacy. All political "Get out the Vote" activity is conducted exclusively through our Super PAC, FreedomWorks for America. All financial and strategic decisions and executive management of FWFA's political initiatives were made exclusively by FWFA National Political Director, Russ Walker, and FWFA Chief Operating Officer, Ryan Hecker.
As a 501 (c3) and (c4) employee, Brendan Steinhauser was not involved in the decision to endorse Ted Cruz early in the Texas Republican primary. Like all candidate endorsements, the decision to endorse Ted Cruz was made by senior management before June 1, 2011, after extensive feedback from our membership in Texas. Any field work conducted by Steinhauser for FWFA was directed by Walker and Hecker.
We look forward to the John Cornyn for Senate campaign's correction of the error, and thank Brendan Steinhauser for his years of service as a valued member of our grassroots team.
FreedomWorks will continue to educate and organize activists across the country that stand for individual liberty and constitutionally-limited government. The grassroots activists of the Tea Party and the larger grassroots freedom movement deserve the credit for the political successes of freedom fighters like Ted Cruz and Mike Lee.
