Freeman's Inaugural Photo Sale to Feature Captivating Prints from the Collection of a Former LIFE Magazine Reporter
PHILADELPHIA, Aug. 29, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Freeman's, the oldest auction house in America, announces the consignment of a collection of photographs from Gail Cameron, a reporter at LIFE magazine from 1956 to 1965. The sale of the collection, as part of Freeman's inaugural Photographs & Photobooks auction, is scheduled for Friday, Oct. 21 and marks another milestone in the company's more than 200-year history. The auction coincides with the 75th anniversary of the first issue of LIFE, which marked the birth of the photo magazine in America.
Cameron's collection is comprised of over 60 striking images that depict pivotal personalities of the era such as the Kennedys, the Beatles, Leonard Bernstein and Grandma Moses. All of the images are vintage, LIFE stamped prints by iconic photojournalists including Alfred Eisenstaedt, Cornell Capa, Gordon Parks, Terry Spencer, Bill Eppridge and Bob Gomel.
In addition to Cameron's collection, the sale will cover a wide range of photographic works from daguerreotypes to cutting-edge contemporary pieces. Notable photographers represented in the auction are Robert Mapplethorpe, Sebastiao Salgado, Herb Ritts, Thomas Ruff, W. Eugene Smith, and Harry Callahan.
"We are so excited to establish these auctions with our knowledgeable specialists who also have such a strong passion for the field," said Samuel M. "Beau" Freeman, Chairman. "It is great to offer even more specialized services and auctions for our clients." Aimee Pflieger, Photography Specialist at Freeman's, adds "Philadelphia is known for its strong collections of photography, its active gallery scene and for nurturing and supporting photographers.
