French Government Awards Honorary Knighthood to Wine Importer Jon-David Headrick
ASHEVILLE, N.C., March 31 /PRNewswire/ -- The government of France has announced that wine importer Jon-David Headrick will be appointed a Chevalier dans l'Ordre du Merite Agricole, one of the highest civilian awards given by the government of France. The rank of chevalier (knight) is a lifetime appointment and is given to acknowledge outstanding service to French agriculture.
Headrick is to be conferred this honor on April 9th, 2010 in a ceremony hosted by the Consul General of France, The Honorable Pascal le Deunff. The award is given in recognition for Headrick's work with small French wineries, most of whom are certified organic. "It is very encouraging to see the French government recognizing the work of our winemakers who still make wine the 'hard way' as well as the work of our team who has spread the word about these family-owned wineries," Headrick said. "We are so fortunate to work with farmers who really care."
Specializing in the wines of the Loire valley of France, Jon-David Headrick Selections is a national wine importer based in Franklin, TN, with offices in Asheville, NC and Atlanta, GA. The company works with distribution partners in 26 states.
Founded in 2005, Jon-David Headrick Selections was named "Best New Specialist Importer" by Wine & Spirits magazine in 2009 as well as a "Wine Importer You Can Trust" by Slate magazine. Headrick's work has been featured in French media outlets such as Radio France, La Nouvelle Republique, and TV Tours.
One of the oldest distinctions awarded by the French state, the Order of Agricultural Merit was established in 1883 as the agricultural equivalent of the Legion of Honor and was awarded in that year to researcher Louis Pasteur. More recent recipients have included chefs Julia Child and Jacques Pepin as well as French wine importer Kermit Lynch. Although Charles de Gaulle abolished the majority of distinctions awarded by the French government in 1963, the Merite Agricole was one of four that survived, along with the La Legion d'Honneur, Les Arts et Lettres, and Les Palmes Academiques.
