MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., Sept. 10, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Based on its recent analysis of the automotive waste heat recovery market, Frost & Sullivan recognizes EnerMotion, Inc. with the 2014 North American Frost & Sullivan Award for Technology Innovation Leadership. EnerMotion's Hybrid Power and Energy Recovery (HYPER™) technology is an intelligent waste heat recovery technology that requires almost no maintenance, leaves a small footprint, and addresses the twin concerns of meeting stringent emission regulations while achieving better fuel economy.
Globally, idling is a major cause of fuel wastage for cars and trucks. Ten minutes of idling can waste an estimated one-tenth to four-tenths of a liter of fuel, so stringent regulations are in place to limit the number of minutes a vehicle can idle, depending on the vehicle used. Another concern is the use of diesel auxiliary power units (APUs) for heavy trucks. States such as California do not permit heavy trucks to operate a diesel-fueled auxiliary power system (APS) for more than five minutes when located within 100 feet of a restricted area. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has several existing regulations directed towards idling and APUs and is also drafting new regulations that address diesel APUs.
"Acknowledging the issues of fuel wastage, HYPER™ technology enables better fuel economy by minimizing idling and reducing dependence on diesel-powered APUs," said Frost & Sullivan Research Analyst Lekshmy Ravi. "Furthermore, by recovering waste heat that escapes from the exhaust stream, this system complies with both existing and upcoming environmental regulations."
HYPER™ technology offers the ideal heating, ventilating, and air conditioning (HVAC) system for vehicles that are at rest or in motion. Thermal energy is captured from the vehicle when it is in motion and can be used to heat or cool the vehicle's interior for up to 10 hours.
HYPER™'s closed-loop system is used to convert high-temperature heat to subzero temperature using a refrigeration cycle. Three independent loops transfer heat from one loop to another. The first loop of the system is formed by a series of heat exchangers; in the second loop, the heat or cold energy is transferred to a thermal tank; and in the third loop, the energy is transferred to the vehicle through an interior heat exchanger.
The absence of moving parts in the HYPER™ system means that maintenance, if any, is minimal unlike diesel and battery powered APU's. The system is also extremely compact, the heavy truck product is only 10 inches deep, with a width of 34 inches, and a height of 40 inches.
"Receiving this award from Frost & Sullivan can be considered vindication for us," states Jack MacDonnell, CEO & President EnerMotion, "we treaded where no one else has dared and are fortunate to have the support of the trucking industry and strategic partners as we near full commercialization of HYPER. We are honored to receive this leadership recognition as HYPER will prove to be a real game changer on a truly global stage."
Additionally, the HYPER™ technology is in line with the two key Mega Trends of Innovating to Zero and Smart is the New Green. Innovating to Zero is a futuristic, sustainable living concept, wherein there are zero emissions, zero accidents, and zero fatalities. As HYPER™ is a zero-emission product requiring no fuel for its operation, and uses a non-ozone depleting refrigerant for the refrigeration cycle, it is completely environmentally friendly.
Smart is the New Green refers to the use of intelligent products that provide feedback to a system to improve its efficiency and adaptability. HYPER™ technology operates continuously, does not require manual switching on/off, and operates autonomously with an onboard controller. Since HYPER™ is a closed-loop system, adjustments made in one component will be reflected in the entire loop, enabling it to function smartly.
The HYPER™ technology's application is not limited to heavy trucks; it can also be deployed in military and defense, refrigerated trailer/reefer units, diesel electric locomotives (cargo and passenger), buses, recreational vehicles (RVs), construction and mining, and passenger vehicles.
"The technology can be integrated with gasoline engines, diesel engines, liquid and compressed natural gas engines, and even hybrid driveline technologies," noted Lekshmy Ravi. "The HYPER™ technology also finds use in stand-alone applications or microgrid utilities, as it has the ability to replace or minimize the use of the ubiquitous diesel generators found in various applications."
Each year, Frost & Sullivan presents this award to the company that has demonstrated uniqueness in developing and leveraging new technologies, which significantly impacts both the functionality and the customer value of the new products and applications. The award lauds the high R&D spend toward innovation, its relevance to the industry and the positive impact on brand perception.
Frost & Sullivan Best Practices Awards recognize companies in a variety of regional and global markets for demonstrating outstanding achievement and superior performance in areas such as leadership, technological innovation, customer service and strategic product development.
