Fruit My Cube Program Helps Chicago-Area Human Resources Personnel Boost Employee Wellness and Productivity

CHICAGO, May 8, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- From snack tables covered with free bagels, donuts and brownies to vending machine fare, it can be nearly impossible for workers to make it through the day without reaching for an unhealthy snack. The Fruit My Cube program (http://www.FruitMyCubeChicago.com), an offshoot of the Belleville Farmers Market, is offering human resources personnel in Downtown Chicago businesses an innovative way to meet wellness objectives at no cost to their business.

"Obesity is now the number two cause of preventable death in the United States," said Phil Mast , the marketing manager of Fruit My Cube. "According to a study by Duke University, the health-related cost of obesity among U.S. workers is $73.1 billion a year. It's safe to say that those numbers won't be shrinking in the years to come unless we change our eating habits."

"Weekly Fruit My Cube deliveries promote health, improve morale, increase productivity and reduce absenteeism at no cost to the employer whatsoever," Mast continued. Each Wednesday, Fruit My Cube participants receive an email with a link to the contents of the Cube for the following week. If they like the contents, participants proceed to the quick and easy checkout page where they can pay for the fruit with a credit card or via PayPal. All Cube orders should be placed by close of business on Friday and will be delivered the following Tuesday. A portion of every purchase goes directly to Taste Buds, a nationally acclaimed program that introduces healthy eating habits to Illinois schools.

Each delivery is accompanied by a campus master list that helps employers to distribute the Cubes quickly and efficiently. Additionally, every Cube buyer receives an email or text message the moment his or her Cube arrives in the office.

Examples of the fruit offered are grapes, peaches, and nectarines, apples, oranges, bananas and pears. "When possible and in season, we use Illinois produce," said Mast. "The fruit passes straight from the farm to us to you. We hand-choose every piece of fruit we deliver to ensure that it is perfectly sized and ripened."

"Helping employees say no to empty calories and yes to healthy alternatives keeps them energized and alert throughout the day," Mast continued. "Plus, it's a boost to employee morale because they'll feel that they're working for someone who cares about them."

An institution in Belleville, Ill. for more than 30 years, Belleville Farmers Market started the Fruit My Cube program in 2010.
