Fuller Seminary's Houston Campus Announces New Assistant Professor of Theology and Culture

PASADENA, Calif., April 8, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Fuller Seminary, one of the largest seminaries in the world, has announced that Dr. David Taylor, an experienced author, pastor, public speaker, and playwright, has been appointed to serve at its campus in Houston as Assistant Professor of Theology and Culture, beginning July 1, 2014.  In addition, Dr. Taylor will serve as the Director of Brehm Texas, a new initiative of Fuller's Brehm Center for Worship, Theology, and the Arts.

"David Taylor's appointment fulfills a vision I've had since the Houston campus was developed to launch a worship, theology, and the arts initiative in the culturally rich environment of Houston," said Dr. J. Frederick Davison, Executive Director of the Brehm Center. "David's unique gifts, scholarship, and experience will enable Brehm Texas to address the needs of the community and flourish."

Launched in 2006 as Fuller's newest regional campus, Fuller Houston started with 20 students, and now offers graduate degrees and certificates in Christian theology and ministry to more than 200 students.

"My hope," said Dr. Taylor, "is that Brehm Texas will benefit educators and seminary students, critical observers of Christianity and the arts, and all those seeking a common vocabulary to discuss the church's mission in the arts."

Born and raised in Guatemala City, Taylor is fluent in Spanish and other languages. Currently completing his doctoral studies in theology and worship at Duke Divinity School, Taylor also studied at Georgetown University, University of Wurzburg, University of Texas at Austin, and Regent College, where he received degrees in theology and biblical studies.

Taylor served at Hope Chapel in Austin for 12 years, as pastor of arts ministries and adult education programs.  He directed music, dance, and film festivals; organized art exhibits; and developed theater ministries and film and theology discussions.

He recently edited "For the Beauty of the Church: Casting a Vision for the Arts," (Baker Books, 2010).  Taylor has also written for Christianity Today, Books & Culture Magazine, and The Living Church; and is a board member of CIVA (Christians in the Visual Arts).  Taylor regularly contributes to a personal website, http://artspastor.blogspot.com.

Fuller Seminary's Houston campus is located at 10200 Richmond Ave., Suite 170. For more information about upcoming classes and enrollment: (713) 360-3400; www.fuller.edu/texas.
