Gender-Neutral Names Are In
BabyNames.com announces the top names of 2018
LAS VEGAS, Nov. 29, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- BabyNames.com has tallied up the most popular names of the year and the winners are Liam for boys and Amelia for girls.
"Liam has been on the top of our charts since 2011," says BabyNames.com founder, Jennifer Moss. "And it hit number one for U.S. births in 2017." Moss explains that the BabyNames.com name charts are derived from their members' favorite name lists. "Our charts have actually predicted the future birth trends by two to five years, or more," says Moss.
Names that are new to the boys' chart include Alaric, George, and Kai. On the girls' side, new names include Ember, Kaia, and Athena. "What's interesting is that I see gender-neutral names like Rowan, Harper, and Quinn jumping onto both sides of the charts," says Moss.
"Gender is now a big issue and it's no longer considered binary," Moss explains. "I think that's why people are leaning toward more gender-neutral names and will continue to do so."
This year also brought the launch of The Baby Names Podcast, where site founders Jennifer Moss and Mallory Moss Katz talk about names, naming trends, and celebrity baby names. The top names of 2018 will be featured on the December 11th episode of the show.
