Girl Scouts of the USA Centennial Silver Dollar Launched on Capitol Hill

WASHINGTON, Feb. 28, 2013 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Treasurer of the United States Rosie Rios today joined Girl Scouts of the USA Chief Executive Officer Anna Maria Chavez and members of the Honorary Congressional Girl Scout Troop —Troop Capitol Hill — to launch the 2013 Girl Scouts of the USA Centennial Silver Dollar.  The coin, which honors the 100^th anniversary of the organization established by Juliette Gordon Low in Savannah, Georgia, on March 12, 1912, was presented during the Girl Scout Women and Girls Leadership Breakfast in the Caucus Room of the Cannon House Office Building.  Congressman Jack Kingston, co-sponsor of the legislation authorizing the United States Mint to mint and issue the commemorative coin, was also on hand for the event.

"Today, the United States Mint launches the 2013 Girl Scouts of the USA Centennial Silver Dollar Coin honoring 100 years of courage, confidence, and character," Treasurer Rios said in her presentation.  "And we will issue up to 350,000 of these silver dollars, with sale surcharges authorized to further Girl Scout programs such as financial literacy and empowerment, business, and self-reliance."

The 2013 Girl Scouts of the USA Centennial Silver Dollar is authorized by Public Law 111-86 — the Girl Scouts USA Centennial Commemorative Coin Act.  The coin's obverse (heads side) depicts three girls who represent the different ages and the diversity of Girls Scouts of the USA.  Inscriptions include COURAGE, CONFIDENCE, and CHARACTER, key elements of the Girl Scouts mission statement.  Additional inscriptions are 2013, LIBERTY, and IN GOD WE TRUST.  The 100th anniversary Trefoil symbol signifies its centennial anniversary.  The coin's reverse (tails side) depicts the iconic Profiles of Girl Scouts of the USA with the inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, $1, and GIRL SCOUTS. 

The United States Mint will begin accepting orders for the 2013 Girl Scouts of the USA Centennial Silver dollar at noon Eastern Time (ET) today at its online catalog, http://www.usmint.gov/catalog, and at 1-800-USA-MINT (872-6468).  Both proof and uncirculated versions of the coin will be available.  A $10 surcharge collected from the sale of each coin is authorized to be paid to Girl Scouts of the USA, which will make funds available for program development and delivery.  Reduced introductory pricing is available through March 29, 2013, at 5 p.m. ET.
