GLASGOW, Scotland, May 20, 2016 /PRNewswire/ --

Glasgow city centre gift store, Maia Gifts, has been awarded 'Independent Gift Retail of the Year - Scotland' at The Greats UK Gift Awards 2016.

They were presented with the award at the UK Gift Industry's annual event held at London's Grosvenor House Hotel on the 5th May.

This is the second award they have collected after winning 'Specialist Retailer of the Year' in 2012 at The Scottish Independent Retail Awards.

Maia Gifts has been in business since 2009 and is located at 21 Bath Street. After a 2-year stint on Buchanan Street, they had to make way for the Buchanan Quarter development and moved around the corner to their current location. The original concept contained a gift store, café and ice cream parlour however after relocation, the business focused solely on offering unique and unusual gifts. The store has now become a must-visit for city centre shoppers and tourists alike.

Business owners Samantha Rose and Soni Ahmed were delighted to pick up such a prestigious award and saw it as a real indication of the hard work and dedication that they and their team have been making over the years.

Samantha said, 'We are just so happy to have won. Making the finals was amazing but to take home the top prize was an incredible feeling. It's just great for us to get recognition for the constant effort that it takes to compete with all the high street stores on our door step.'

Both Samantha and Soni left their thriving careers in Accounting and Engineers respectively to start their own business and have never looked back. Selling their home and investing every last penny into their business idea, they risked everything to make their dream become a reality.

Soni added, 'We started with an idea and never expected that we would do so well. I just hope that this inspires others out there to realise that it is possible to go out and do something for themselves. It's not easy to run your own business but it's certainly never dull and the rewards are there if you put in the hard work.'

Having just launched a new and improved online store (http://www.maiagifts.co.uk) Maia Gifts are confident that they will continue to be popular for gift seekers that want something special that isn't easily found on the high street.

They are now hoping that winning this award will raise their profile further and help attract more new customers to their Glasgow store and their website.
