WALTHAM, Mass. and SOUTHFIELD, Mich., June 11, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Global Advanced Metals Pty Ltd (GAM), a leading and socially responsible producer of tantalum, has joined AIAG, a not-for-profit, member-supported organization that helps automotive companies operate at peak performance. GAM is one of the world's premier suppliers of conflict-free tantalum, which is an important material component within automotive electronics systems, and was the first metal processor to be declared conflict free in 2010.

"GAM is our first member from the mining, smelting and processing activities of the supply chain," said J. Scot Sharland, executive director of AIAG. "We welcome their expertise and experience as, together, we work to manage this very complex sourcing and compliance challenge."

As a member of AIAG, GAM joins an association of automakers, suppliers, retailers, service providers, academics and governments that are collaborating to streamline global industry standards and business practices. AIAG's conflict minerals work group is helping automotive companies comply with 1502 of the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act on Conflict Minerals. AIAG is examining the relevant supply chains to ensure that automotive parts and assemblies do not contain conflict minerals that have contributed to financing armed conflicts in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and adjoining countries. Tantalum is one of the conflict minerals identified in Section 1502 of the Dodd-Frank Act.

"We are excited about this opportunity to work with AIAG and its member companies to gain a deeper understanding of the challenges facing the automotive supply chain," said Andrew O'Donovan, CEO of GAM. "Our knowledge and common purpose to engage with member companies will help the sustainable and responsible sourcing of these minerals."
