NEW YORK, Nov. 25, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Key Findings
Consumer demand for consistent access to time-shifted content across set top boxes and consumer electronics (CE) devices—coupled with the huge growth in catch-up TV content libraries and a need to move away from expensive hard drives in on-premises set top boxes—have together created a perfect scenario for a cloud-based paradigm for digital video recording (DVR) functions
-Over-the-top (OTT) services have paved the way for individually paced, on-demand, consumption models that have led to this shift in consumer behavior This, in turn, has made the race toward cloud DVR even more inevitable Consumers are demanding a seamless multi-screen viewing experience with the same quality of content and content experience as traditional TV Meanwhile, service providers and broadcasters are struggling to reduce equipment costs and improve service agility
-There is keen awareness of the urgency of deploying cloud DVR within the pay TV community, but there remain several challenges that the pay TV industry as a whole needs to overcome
-Content rights remain a key business and technical issue Scalability, cross-platform compatibility, and cost-efficiency are other challenges Copy protection laws, which in most jurisdictions require one copy of content to be stored per consumer in the cloud, are a key driver for cloud DVR revenue
-Recent advances in technology that allow just-in-time transcoders to work with moderate storage resources are improving affordability as compared to just-in-time packaging systems That said, cost and complexity are still key challenges Monetization of replayed content is also an elusive goal for now Maintaining quality of experience (QoE) in the face of network congestion and concerns related to handling infrastructure such as volume of storage, also remain critical issues
-On the bright side, cloud DVR provides decisive return on investment (RoI) fairly quickly by reducing the need for expensive set top boxes with large hard drives This, in turn, reduces costly truck rolls and repair costs, and curbs subscriber churn while increasing viewership numbers, particularly in the sought after - age group
