DUBLIN, September 16, 2016 /PRNewswire/ --
Research and Markets has announced the addition of the "Global CMOS Camera Module Market 2016-2020" report to their offering.
The report forecasts the global CMOS camera module market to grow at a CAGR of 17.95% during the period 2016-2020.
Reduction in height of camera modules will be a key trend for market growth. The thickness of smartphones is determined by camera modules because the image sensor used in the camera must stay at a certain distance from the lens. Most smartphones have two cameras: one at the front and the other at the back. The main camera is at the back that is used for taking high-quality pictures or shooting videos, while the front camera is used for video calling or self-portraits. Higher-quality camera uses more lens elements and autofocus, which adds to depth of the camera module. Camera module vendors such as OmniVision are working on reducing the height of camera module by widening the angle of light acceptance. PureCel is one of their products that has increased the angle of light acceptance with low height. Reduction in the height of camera modules will lead to development of thinner and lighter smartphones and their adoption in other devices such as wearables."
According to the report, CMOS camera modules have already been adopted in many consumer applications like smartphones and digital cameras. They are slowly becoming parts in automobiles for functions like car safety, driving assistance, and comfort level enhancement. Automotive sensors differ from consumer market or industrial market sensors. Parameters such as dynamic range, temperature, cost, and speed have to be optimized for a sensor to be used in vehicles. Sensors need different design and processing techniques in order to achieve automotive specifications. Carmakers such as Nissan, Ford, and Tesla are already marketing their vehicles, highlighting the image sensors used in them. The emerging importance of CMOS camera modules in the automotive sector will be a key driver for market growth.
Further, the report states that camera module companies have to follow international standards when it comes to designing and manufacturing the modules.
