The global laboratory and handheld Raman instruments market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 9.74% during the period 2016-2020.

Raman instruments are used to identify and break down the chemical composition of physical materials based on the inelastic scattering of monochromatic light obtained when the material or sample is exposed to a light source, usually a laser source. This method is called Raman spectroscopy, and it is used to provide a fingerprint by which molecules can be identified. In this process, the sample is illuminated with a laser beam, due to which electromagnetic radiation is emitted. This electromagnetic radiation is then collected, through a monochromator, with a lens. The frequency of the re-emitted photons is shifted up or down in accordance with the original monochromatic frequency called the Raman Effect.

The shift in the photons provides information about vibrational, rotational, and other low-frequency transitions in the molecules of the sample. The resulting pattern obtained gives a unique fingerprint or pattern that allows the user to match it with existing patterns and identify the composition of the sample.

The popularity of hyphenated, or hybrid, Raman instruments will continue to rise. The outsourcing of drug discovery processes to subcontract laboratories to cut costs is another trend that will gain popularity between 2015 and 2020.

According to the report, the major growth driver for the global laboratory and handheld Raman instruments market is the advantages that Raman spectroscopy has over other methods. The advancements in technology, the increased spending on R&D, and the expansion of research facilities will also fuel the growth of this market over the forecast period.

Further, the report states that the low replacement cycles for these instruments will be a major challenge that will hinder the growth of the market during the forecast period.
