Global Markets for Circuit Elements with Memory: Memresistors, Memcapacitors, Meminductors
LONDON, Sept. 1, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Reportbuyer.com has added a new market research report:
Global Markets for Circuit Elements with Memory: Memresistors, Memcapacitors, Meminductors
https://www.reportbuyer.com/product/2009164/Global-Markets-for-Circuit-Elements-with-Memory-Memresistors-Memcapacitors-Meminductors.html
STUDY BACKGROUND
It has been stated:
"Circuit elements that store information without the need of a power source would represent a paradigm change in electronics, allowing for low-power computation and storage. In addition, if that information spans a continuous range of values, analog computation may replace the present digital one. Such a concept is also likely to be at the origin of the workings of the human brain and possibly of many other mechanisms in living organisms so that such circuit elements may help us understand adaptive and spontaneous behavior, or even learning."
Memresistors, or memristors, have received the lion's share of attention, starting with the 2010 announcement that Hewlett Packard and Hynix Semiconductor of Seoul, Korea would collaborate to commercialize memristor technology in the form of Resistive Random Access Memory or RRAM. (In fact, several other companies have beaten HP/Hynix to the market, with the first commercial memristor devices appearing in 2013.) However, in the longer term, it may be possible to construct memory circuits that work on capacitive and/or inductive principles.
STUDY GOALS AND OBJECTIVES
The goal of this report is to survey emerging memristor and related technologies (e.g., memcapacitors and meminductors) and their applications, identify those that are most likely to achieve significant commercial sales in the next five years to 10 years (2013 to 2023), and develop quantitative estimates of potential sales.
The report's specific objectives support this broad goal. These objectives include singling out the technologies and applications with the greatest commercial potential in the 2013 to 2023 time frame, identifying market drivers and evaluating obstacles to their successful commercialization, and projecting their future sales.
INTENDED AUDIENCE
This report is intended especially for executives, entrepreneurs, investors, venture capitalists, and other readers with a need to know where the market for memristors and similar devices is headed over the next 5 years to 10 years. Although the report is organized around specific technologies, it is largely nontechnical in nature and coverage. That is, it is concerned less with theory and jargon than with what works, how much of the latter the market is likely to purchase, and at what price.
The report has not been written specifically for scientists and technologists. However, the report's findings concerning the market for their work, including the availability of government and corporate research funding for different technologies and applications, should interest them as well.
SCOPE AND FORMAT
The proposed report will describe the basic technologies behind memresistors, memcapacitors and meminductors; their history and current state of development; theoretical advantages and disadvantages; challenges that must be overcome to commercialize them; possible time frames for their commercialization; and potential applications.
The report will focus on memristors, which are much closer to commercialization than the other two basic technologies; types of memristor (e.g. titanium dioxide, polymeric, ferroelectric, spin resistive), their strengths and weaknesses, and expected time to market; applications; and future sales.
The report will highlight the degree to which expected sales represent new markets vs. cannibalizing existing markets and the implications for suppliers' business strategies. Cannibalization reportedly is a significant concern of developers like Hynix that have a presence in competing markets.
The study format includes the following major elements:
• Executive summary.
• Definitions.
• Historical milestones.
• Technologies and applications that have the greatest commercial potential through 2023.
• Detailed market estimates and projections for each application and material during the period 2012 to 2017.
• General assessment of expected market trends in the longer term (2017 to 2023).
• Companies, academic and government laboratories that are developing commercial memristors, memcapacitors, and meminductors.
• Patent analysis.
INFORMATION SOURCES AND METHODOLOGY
Projecting the market for emerging technologies, whose commercial potential has not yet been proven, is a challenging task. This is nowhere more true than memristors and related technologies, which may help to explain why many analysts focus on supply-side technology assessments.
However, BCC Research's objective in this report is to provide not just a technology assessment but also an initial commercial assessment of the potential commercial market for memristors, memcapacitors, and meminductors. To accomplish this objective, BCC Research used a multiphase approach to identify the technologies and applications with the greatest commercial potential and to quantify the related markets.
In the first phase of the analysis, BCC Research identified a long list of memristor and related technologies and applications, including those that are still under development. In the second phase, BCC Research eliminated those applications that appear to have little likelihood of making it into commercial use in the next five to 10 years, which was accomplished through a literature review and interviews with industry sources. The result of phase two was a short list of technologies with the greatest commercial potential over the time period covered by this report.
The third phase focused on quantifying the potential market for each short- technology, by application, and identifying the main prerequisites for commercial success. Phase three actually had two phases: 1) development of near- to- midterm (2013 to 2018) projections, and 2) development of longer-term (2018 to 2023) projections.
The development of such long-term projections is a departure from the usual BCC Reserach report format, necessitated by the long time frame for commercialization of many of the technologies analyzed in this report. Obviously, the projections for the out-years beyond 2018 are more tentative than the projections for 2013 to 2018.
The specific assumptions and approach BCC Research used to develop the projections (both near/midterm and long-term) for each technology and application are documented in detail under the various segments addressed. This way, readers can see how the market estimates were developed and, if they so desire, test the impact on the final numbers of changing the underlying assumptions.
One of the approaches used by BCC Research deserves special mention here. In the case of some technology applications that are still under development, BCC Research used the sales performance of non-memristor technologies and applications that share some of the same functions or other characteristics with the respective memristor applications as a benchmark for assessing the latter's sales potential.
