Goodwill Industries of the Chesapeake, Inc. Awarded $291,177 Grant
Older adults to work and receive training in local agencies serving the community
ELKTON, Md., Aug. 27, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Goodwill Industries of the Chesapeake, Inc. announced that it has received a grant of $291,177 from Senior Service America, Inc. This grant will enable a minimum of 48 low-income older adults in Cecil and Harford Counties to work in temporary, part-time jobs through June 30, 2015. These older adults will participate in the Senior Community Service Employment Program (SCSEP), established by the Older Americans Act more than 40 years ago. SCSEP is the only federal government program mandated to assist unemployed older adults to rejoin the workforce.
This is the second consecutive year that Goodwill Industries of the Chesapeake has received a grant from Senior Service America. In July 2013, the agency was awarded its first grant after a competitive application and review process. "The SCSEP Program has provided Goodwill the opportunity to help seniors in Cecil and Harford Counties with on the job training and employment," said Lisa Rusyniak, President & CEO of Goodwill Industries of the Chesapeake, Inc. "We are happy to partner with Senior Service America, Inc. to provide our services to those who need our help."
While employed as SCSEP participants, the older workers will be assigned to 14 local nonprofit and government agencies, including Meals on Wheels, Harford Community College, Harford County Public Library, and Union Hospital. The older workers also will receive on-the-job training to enhance their opportunities in the local job market.
"Far too many low-income older adults are among the long-term unemployed," says Tony Sarmiento, Senior Service America Executive Director. "This program provides them with skills and renewed hope as they serve their community."
If you are a senior citizen (age 55 or over) residing in Harford or Cecil county or are a local government or non-profit agency [501(c)3] who is interested in participating in the program, please contact:
