Government-Made Millionaire Steve Danon Exposed in New Website by Hilliard Campaign
Catapulted by angry Danon Campaign, Hilliard's Controversial Direct-Mail Piece becomes Interactive Website and Forefront of Supe Race
SAN DIEGO, May 21, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- A week ago, a direct mail piece by the Hilliard for Supervisor campaign about one of their opponents, government-made millionaire Steve Danon, was the talk of the town at a recent Republican political gathering.
"First, we received calls asking for copies of the Danon piece from veteran political consultants," said K.B. Forbes, campaign manager for Carl Hilliard's bid for the Third District, San Diego County Board of Supervisors. "Then, near the end of last week, provoked by the Danon campaign, the media were asking about it. Finally, the Danon folks started dispatching whiny robocalls against us. The truth struck a raw nerve and catapulted our direct mail piece to the forefront of this campaign."
In less than 72 hours, the Hilliard campaign took the direct-mail piece and turned it into an interactive website (governmentmademillionaire.com or danonfacts.com) that contains all the documentation, news stories, government websites, and personal disclosure reports—some in Steve Danon's own handwriting—that support the direct mail piece.
What struck the raw nerve? The fact that Steve Danon, Congressman Brian Bilbray's Chief of Staff, has been campaigning full-time for almost three years while allegedly working full-time on the federal clock. Danon has earned $934,136.11 from federal taxpayers as of December 31, 2011.
By election day, Danon will have earned over $1,000,000 in federal pay and reimbursements. The Hilliard campaign has repeatedly called on Danon to release documentation proving he isn't paid-to-campaign.
Danon's paid-to-campaign scandal gained traction when he refused to provide two different media outlets, the San Diego Union-Tribune and the North County Times, with detailed calendar, email, telephone, and cellular phone records so they could verify that Danon wasn't fundraising or campaigning while on the federal clock.
Hilliard's direct mail piece also took note of Danon's close and cozy relationship with Brent R. Wilkes, the central figure of disgraced ex-Congressman Duke Cunningham's defense contracting scandal. Danon received a $2,500 contribution from Wilkes in 2001, and Wilkes and his associates funneled $10,000 in contributions to Danon's boss the year before that. Danon had been interacting with Wilkes seven years before Wilkes was convicted of 13 felonies for bribing Cunningham.
