ELLICOTT CITY, Md., Nov. 3, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Since the devastating flood that ravaged historic Ellicott City on the night of July 30, 2016, Don Reuwer has worked tirelessly to help his many tenants and businesses recover as quickly as possible on Main Street. For over 30 years Reuwer has been a leader in revitalizing Historic Ellicott City. His passion has been to rehab old historic structures into thriving businesses. Sadly, the flood destroyed many of those buildings but that did not deter Don Reuwer from immediately getting to work to restore each structure.
Maryland Governor Larry Hogan and Howard County Executive Allan Kittleman recognized Reuwer's heroic efforts at the "Recognizing Ellicott City Heroes" event on Friday, October 28 at a recently renovated shop on Main Street.
Since the night of the storm, Don's presence could be felt all over the historic district. He and his son Trae have worked tirelessly, restoring and rebuilding the many buildings that they own that have been affected by the storm. As their nominator wrote, "I have seen first-hand the work that has gone into these buildings. I have stood back and witnessed them quietly confer on how to proceed on the renovations and it is with great care that they are proceeding to make changes."
"This is a celebration of the heroism that was on that night," said County Executive Allan Kittleman. The Honorees received a button with the iconic historic Ellicott City clock that was restored after floodwaters swept it away in July. The button reads, "time shows us what really matters."
Upon receipt, Don Reuwer stated, "I am humbled by the award, but the true heroes are the merchants who have worked tirelessly since the night of July 30 to reopen their businesses." Reuwer went on to say he was "honored to help expedite and do any and everything possible to help make it happen for the merchants." He pledged that his work would continue until every building he owns is once again open for business.
Reuwer urges the public to please support the businesses and restaurants that have reopened.
