Governor's Advisory Commission on Latino Affairs to co-sponsor educational symposium addressing Latino graduation rates

HARRISBURG, Pa., Dec. 11, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Governor's Advisory Commission on Latino Affairs (GACLA) and the DeSales University Department of Education will co-sponsor an evening symposium, Moving Forward, which will address the current high drop-out rates for Latinos and other minority students.

"One of GACLA's primary goals is to encourage our Latino-Hispanic community to achieve educational success. This event will highlight the best-practice educational models that have achieved improvement in graduation rates, especially for the Latino-Hispanic community," Maria Montero Executive Director of GACLA said.

Ana Sainz de la Pena, a GACLA commissioner and a lifelong educator, said that "the symposium will provide a forum for schools and programs to share strategies that have proven effective in maximizing students' chances for success."

Panelists from school districts and charter schools will highlight promising strategies and partnerships. Maria Montero and Eltgad Roces, Chairperson of GACLA will lead the discussion.

School district administrators, teachers, parents, students and all who are interested in education are invited to attend.  The symposium is free-of-charge and will take place on the DeSales Campus in the University Center building on Wednesday, December 12, 2012, 5:30 – 8:30 p.m.  Attendees are asked to preregister through the DeSales website, http://www.desales.edu/home/academics/graduate-studies/programs-of-study/m-ed---master-of-education/moving-forward-symposium or by calling 610-282-1100 x1461.
