GW's Graduate School of Political Management Introduces First-of-Its-Kind Master's Degree in Advocacy in the Global Environment
Graduate Certificate in Global Public Relations Also Will Be Offered
WASHINGTON, April 1, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Continuing a tradition of innovation in the field of applied political education, the George Washington University's Graduate School of Political Management (GSPM) plans to launch its master's degree in advocacy in the global environment and graduate certificate in global public relations this fall.
The 39-credit degree will equip students with the tools necessary to think strategically about impacting policy through communications and advocacy in a region or specific nation. Graduates will be well-positioned to become global governance and policy influencers, with an international view of citizenship and leadership.
The 18-credit certificate will provide public relations professionals with the practical and analytical tools to reach a global audience. Graduates will be well-positioned to become senior communications professionals in the public and private sectors.
The programs will be offered in both face-to-face and an online/face-to-face hybrid approach to maximize the diversity of the student body.
Additionally, students will increase their understanding of the world through a series of global perspective courses that will be crafted and delivered in part through weeklong "in-country" learning experiences in key international cities. A central element of the master's program will be the requirement to participate in a "Global Perspective" course in each of four geographies: Asia, Europe, Greater Middle East/Africa and Latin America.
"Whether you are seeking commerce or a cause, learning advocacy in a global environment is an essential skill to really be successful," said GSPM Director Mark Kennedy. "This is the first program that will teach students not just how to engage your own state capital or Washington, but how you engage Beijing, Brussels or Brasília."
Graduates of the advocacy in the global environment program will be positioned to hold a variety of positions including, but not limited to: frontline lobbyists before legislatures of foreign countries; strategy consultants, creating advocacy plans for multinational corporations, nonprofits, NGOs, or international agencies on a particular law change, regulation modification or relationship development for future interaction; and legislative or regulatory advisors to clients who seek changes in laws, regulations or policies for either a country or region.
"We suffer from tremendous clutter in politics, business and our daily lives. We're aiming to teach students how to be able to cut through that clutter and to ensure that their messages are not only heard but that action is taken on those messages," said David Rehr, GSPM adjunct professor and a former trade association CEO.
